The game of logic, also known as video games intelligence or video game puzzle, is a genre of video games that require mental agility features to the player. They can involve problems of logic, mathematics, strategy, pattern recognition, completing words, or even pure chance. Gender can be difficult to describe since each one has a unique style.

Some more well-known logic video games, such as Tetris, aim to accommodate falling pieces to organize them in the right way. Others may consist of arranging objects or of reaching a goal by eliminating enemies or activating buttons, as in Bomberman.

The exciting thing about logic video games is that they can combine to form new games, as in Tetris 2 that combines elements of Tetris with Dr. Mario, or take an idea and expand it, like Tetrisphere.

Many video games that are similar to logical contain riddles that must be solved to get ahead. It is common in graphic adventure games and also in others such as The Legend of Zelda, Resident Evil, and Professor Layton.

Types of Logic Video Games

Within the great variety between logic games, some categories can divide by their characteristics:

Mental Agility

Mental agility games are those that require speed of reasoning, rather than ingenuity or reflection. On a different plane, there are games where the stage must be manipulated in real-time so that moving objects or characters reach their goal.

Block Breaking ( Block-breaking game )

Games based on breaking blocks through an object that bounces as it would happen in the paddle ball whose best-known example is the Arkanoid. In that sense, it has a certain similarity with a ball and paddle games like Pong.

Blocks Fall ( Falling block puzzle )

Many of the mental agility games present in common the concept of “figure matching” either by having different shapes and colors with each other; Tetris being the best-known example, with blocks of different ways that fall and must fit together to form rows. It was popularized in the eighties by an arcade , then moving to computers and portable consoles such as the Game Boy. Other known examples of the genus are Puyo Puyo, Columns, Lumines, or Dr. Mario, among others.

Games Trios Match

There are other similar logic games, but not based on associating «falling blocks,» but which also consist of combining pieces such as Candy Crush Saga or Bejeweled, where trios of identical figures must be put together, with limited time.

Shooter ( Orb shooter )

Another type of mental agility game that also overlaps with the comparable figures. They consist of shooting balls at a row of balls so that when they match their colors, they eliminate. Examples Puzz Loop, Zuma, Luxor, etc.

Capture Grid ( Grid capture )

They are usually videogames controlled by a mouse that consists of an enclosed area with its layout with the difficulty of avoiding any obstacle, other competitors that are done with the victory, or a time limit. Example: Qix, Jeezball, Gals Panic, etc.

Logic-Based on Physics

They require the player to use the physics of the game correctly (such as throwing trajectories or objects falling, swinging, crashing, etc.) to solve each situation. Speed is not so important, but wit and mental visualization.

Examples: The Incredible Machine, World of Goo, Cut the Rope.

Hidden Object Games

Also known as “hidden object” games, they are games in which the player must find objects from a list that are half-hidden in an image. They enjoy popularity in phones and tablets.

Examples: Alice: An Interactive Museum, Criminal Case, Mystery Case Files.

Puzzle-Solving Games

Video games based on solving puzzles, puzzles, or riddles are those that require reflection and deductive reasoning to find the solution to a given problem. Sometimes they are integrated into a story and an explorable world, then forming a graphic adventure game ( Myst, the Atlantis series ). Others, known as riddles, are typically presented as browser games in which the player must decipher an enigma posed in one image to move on to the next one until the series is complete and revealed.

Examples: Professor Layton, Lemmings, or Adventures of Lolo.

Puzzle Platformer

Games based on popular platform games where the player questions a series of puzzles or riddles that must solve to continue advancing. Examples Oddworld, Portal, or Ico.

Mental Age Games ( Brain game )

Mental age or brain age video games are educational games where your psychic abilities are challenging in some way. Example: Dr. Kawashima Brain Training

Word Games

Traditional Logic Games

Many classic logic games have adapted to the digital format, such as solitaire games, or mahjong games, as well as word formation games, combining numbers and other types. These can entirely encompass those of matching figures.

Logic Games Based on Mazes

There are other types of games that have some distinctive features that are also worth mentioning. Logic games based on mazes, also known as rock and diamonds (lit. “rocks and diamonds”) that consist of collecting a series of objects while avoiding rocks that fall as in Boulder Dash or Repton.
